Summer is winding down. The days are getting just a little bit shorter and the evenings are just a little bit cooler. It’s around this time of year that we start looking at our living spaces and thinking about how to keep that warm, vibrant summer energy alive indoors during the cooler months ahead.Ā

Whether you are moving your patio plants back inside before the first chilly night or looking to start your very first indoor garden, here's a practical guide to choosing, styling, and keeping houseplants alive this season.Ā

    Be Honest About Your Lighting

The biggest mistake people make is buying a plant based on how beautiful it is, rather than knowing what type of light they get in their space. Before you head to the nursery, take a look at your windows:Ā

Direct Light (South/West facing):Ā This is intense, bright sunlight. It’s perfect for succulents and cacti, but it will burn sensitive leaves.Ā

Indirect Light (East/West facing):Ā Plenty of bright light without the harsh, direct rays. This is the sweet spot for most indoor tropicals.Ā

Low Light (North facing or deep corners):Ā Very minimal light. No plant thrives in total darkness, but some are tough enough to handle dim spaces.Ā

    Forgiving Options for Beginners

If you don't have a green thumb or simply want a plant that doesn’t require constant attention, these three are incredibly reliable.Ā

    1. Pothos

This is the ultimate starter plant. It grows long, trailing vines that look great on bookshelves or mantels. Pothos plants can handle low light, recover quickly if you forget to water it, and are very easy to grow.Ā

    2. Snake Plant

If you want something modern and architectural, the snake plant is a great choice. It features stiff, upright leaves and thrives on neglect. You only need to water it when the soil is completely dry, making it perfect for busy schedules.Ā

    3. ZZ Plant

With shiny, dark green leaves, the ZZ plant looks polished and healthy with almost zero effort. It stores water efficiently under the soil, so it can easily go a few weeks without watering.Ā

A Step Up: For a Bit More of a Challenge

If you have a bit of experience and want a larger statement piece for a room, try these expressive options.Ā

    1. Monstera Deliciosa

With its large, iconic split leaves, the Monstera adds an instant tropical feel to a living room. It needs a good amount of bright, indirect light and room to grow. You’ll also want to give it a stake or moss pole to climb as it gets bigger.Ā

    2. Fiddle Leaf Fig

This is a favorite for home staging because of its dramatic, tree-like look. However, it can be a bit finicky. The secret is consistency: put it in a spot with great indirect light, keep it away from cold drafts or heating vents, and water it only when the top inch of soil dries out.Ā

    The Late-Summer Transition

If you brought some of your houseplants outside for the summer, they need to come back in before overnight temperatures drop below 55°F. Give them a good rinse to check for bugs before bringing them through the door.

Once everything is inside for the season, remember that plant growth slows down as winter approaches.Ā

Cut Back on Water:Ā Overwatering is the number one killer of houseplants. Always check the soil with your finger first. If it feels damp, wait a few days.Ā

Stop the Fertilizer:Ā Plants don't grow much in the fall and winter, so they don't need extra nutrients right now.Ā

Watch the Sun:Ā As the sun's angle changes, a spot that was bright in June might be dark in October. Move your plants closer to windows if they look like they are stretching for light.Ā

    Styling Plants Like a Pro

Plants look best when they feel like part of the room’s design, not just an afterthought.Ā

Group in Odd Numbers:Ā Cluster three plants together instead of lining them up. Mix a tall plant, a bushy plant, and a trailing plant to create some natural depth.Ā

Soften Sharp Corners:Ā Place a plant next to a media console, a desk, or a bare corner. The organic shapes instantly make a room feel more relaxed.Ā

Choose the Right Pots:Ā Match your planters to your home's style, whether that's terracotta, concrete, or classic ceramic. Just make sure the pots have drainage holes, or keep the plant in its plastic nursery pot inside the decorative one.Ā

At the end of the day, taking care of plants is a nice way to slow down and connect with the seasons. It’s a simple project that makes a massive difference in how your home feels.Ā

A home filled with life feels different. We love talking through what makes a space feel like home, whatever that means for you right now. If you're looking for a new space to call your own this season, feel free to reach out.
